BMW X7 vs. X5: Specs & Performance

Let’s start our guide by looking under the hood of the BMW X5 and X7. They both offer strong engines that deliver plenty of horsepower and torque to the Arcadia roads, but their powertrains differ in a few key categories:

  • They both have the same initial output of 375 horsepower, but the BMW X5 goes up to 617 horsepower while the X7 maxes out at 631 horsepower.
  • The X5 comes with an electrified plug-in hybrid model (the X5 xDrive50e) that offers 39 miles of all-electric range and a robust 483 horsepower.
  • As the biggest BMW SUV, the BMW X7 takes a bit of a hit in terms of fuel economy compared to the smaller X5–the X5 earns 23 mpg city/27 mpg highway while the X7 earns 21 mpg city/25 mpg highway.
  • The BMW X7 comes standard with BMW xDrive all-wheel drive, while the X5 offers it as an upgrade.

BMW X7 vs. X5: Cargo Space & Seating

As we mentioned above, the BMW X7 is the biggest BMW SUV currently made, so naturally it has the advantage when it comes to passenger and cargo room. However, the mid-size BMW X5 still offers plenty of space of its own! Here are some key differences in interior size:

  • The BMW X5 comes standard with two rows of seats for a seating capacity of five, but you can add a third-row bench to increase the capacity to seven.
  • The BMW X7 comes standard with three rows of seats for up to seven passengers, with a larger third-row bench than the X5.
  • The BMW X5 cargo space maxes out at 72.3 cubic feet with all seats folded, while the BMW X7 cargo space is 90.4 cubic feet behind the first row.
